We believe that you should know where your (super)foods come from and we are dedicated to being 100% transparent with you at all times.
At Your Super, we take pride in the purity and quality of our ingredients and we guarantee that all of our products are USDA Certified Organic, NON-GMO verified, 100% plant-based and free from gluten, nuts, soy, dairy, sweeteners, fillers, additives, preservatives, flavoring, and glyphosate.
Customers often ask about heavy metals found in food and we wanted to share more information to help you better understand these naturally occurring elements.
Heavy metals are naturally occurring elements that are found throughout the earth’s crust. Scientifically speaking, heavy metals are defined as metallic elements that have a relatively high density compared to water. Some heavy metals are essential nutrients that are required for various bodily functions. Out of the 23 identified heavy metals, there are 4 that pose the biggest threat to your health when high levels are detected: mercury, lead, arsenic, and chromium.
Heavy metals enter into the human body via air, water, and food. Unfortunately, there’s no way you can avoid heavy metals because you’re exposed to them every day.
Metals, such as arsenic, lead, cadmium, mercury, and others - are found in almost all foods because of the nature of our food supply. The truth is, these elements are a result of environmental pollutants in the air, water, and soil and they naturally enter the food supply when plants grow and absorb the nutrients from the soil.
Lead, for example, is present in the environment and can be detected in just about any material. It is unlikely that anything is lead-free since lead is present to some degree in the air we breathe, the water we drink, and the soil in which we grow our foods.
Many products are formulated with GMOs and artificial ingredients and therefore often have low or no traces of heavy metals. Some superfoods contain small amounts of heavy metals that occur naturally, therefore we always test for heavy metals during production.
Proposition 65 (Prop 65) is a California law that is intended to help the public make informed decisions about chemicals known to cause health issues including cancer and birth defects. This requirement is unique to California and is not a national standard related to health or safety-- both the FDA (Food and Drug Administration) and WHO (World Health Organization) have different standards.
The California law states that a consumer warning must be issued when a substance on the Prop 65 chemical list is present above a very low threshold. This list contains approximately 900 substances and is constantly evolving.
As a California based company, we face the rigorous standards of Proposition 65 that set a limit of safety for lead content of all foods. Proposition 65 sets a maximum exposure level of 15 micrograms/day for carcinogenicity and 0.5 micrograms/day for reproductive toxicity. The 0.5 micrograms/day level represents the level at which there is no observable effect in humans exposed divided by a 1,000 safety factor. In other words, a level 1,000 times higher would still not have any observable effect in humans. These levels are 1000 times lower than what the FDA and WHO suggest as save levels.
This can be compared to the Provisional Total Tolerable Intake (PTTI) levels published by the FDA that range from 6 micrograms/day for children 0-6 years of age, 15 micrograms/day for children 7+ years, 25 micrograms/day for pregnant/lactating women and 75 micrograms/day for adult women.
As a good comparison, other natural foods you might eat daily like mixed nuts have 10.2 micrograms, or spinach has 7.0 micrograms or cucumbers have 3.4 micrograms per serving. At Your Super, we’ve committed to setting an internal standard of 2 micrograms or lower.
At Your Super, we source all of our superfoods directly from farmers to monitor the quality and purity of our products. Our goal is to deliver products that go from the farm to your front door.
All of our ingredients are immediately tested for pesticides, heavy metals, and microbiology. Once the ingredients are naturally dried or freeze-dried, they are milled softly into powders and tested once again by 3rd party labs. Our mixes are tested for mercury, lead, cadmium, arsenic, and glyphosate before we deliver you the finished product.
With our testing schedule, we can assure everyone that our products are substantially below the Provisional Total Tolerable Intake (PTTI) for lead set by the FDA. So, there is no scientific basis for any concern whatsoever about lead in our products. They are safe, organic, and healthy!
We continually check updates to the changing Prop 65 regulations to ensure our products are compliant with the Prop65 guidelines and closely monitor these results daily to keep you safe. You can learn more about our quality assurance process and testing, here.
